The launch of the new national contract for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) on 1 April has introduced a new opportunity for councils to support fair trade. Sylvia Gray, Chair of the SSN Steering Group and fair trade lead at East Dunbartonshire Council, has worked with Scotland Excel to create provisions to help councils to source products more ethically.

The European Commission is calling on public procurement bodies to submit proposals for collaborative, cross-border projects that support “buyers groups” in utilising Public Procurement of Innovation. The projects should improve the economic framework conditions for innovation, and contribute to smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. The deadline for submissions is 28 May 2013.

The Procurement Reform Bill has moved another stage forward, following a meeting last week of the Sustainable Procurement Steering Group, on which SSN sits. The Sustainable Procurement Steering Group is a short-life group that was set up to advise the Scottish Government on the development of the Bill, and last week's meeting focused on responses to the Bill consultation period, which ran from August to November last year. SSN submitted a response during this period, based on input from members and their procurement colleagues.
