Following the publication of estimates of Scottish greenhouse gas emissions data for 2008, the Scottish Government announced on 7 September that greenhouse gas emissions in Scotland fell 3% between 2007 and 2008, and 20% from 1990 levels. WWF Scotland has responded to the news by calling on Scotland to "lock in its climate emissions reduction savings".

Professor Robert Watson says that if emissions "embedded" in imported goods are counted, UK emissions are up, not down. That means developing countries - particularly China - are blamed for goods they buy for export to the West.
